Lava Flow

From our trip to Kauai in 2007
The favorite when vacationing in the Hawaiian islands, the Lava Flow is just sweet goodness that lets you know you've arrived in paradise.  Cindy and I like a slight variation on this one so we'll give you both versions (a rum version and a vodka version).

The main thing with this drink is that it is heterogeneous (or not totally mixed).  The separation of the strawberry part of the drink from the creamy part of the drink is what makes it look like lava flowing down the insides of the glass.

The Original (rum version)
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1 oz. Malibu coconut rum
  • 1 oz. light rum
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. coconut cream
  • 2 oz. frozen strawberries
The trick to this is to blend the rum and strawberries separately from the other stuff, rinsing the blender in between. (If you're using strawberry puree, or Mr. and Mrs. T's strawberry daiquiri mix, you can skip this and simply blend everything BUT the puree.)

Pour the strawberry mix or the puree to the bottom of a large glass (a hurricane glass is traditional).   Rinse the blender... Then blend the coconut cream, pineapple juice and 1/2 banana and ice. Pour the blender ingredients into the glass of strawberry goodness. (you can also reverse the order and pour the strawberry mix on top, ...up to you). The red strawberry mix swirls in the drink, simulating a lava flow.

Garnish with a pineapple wedge and an umbrella if you have one.

Cindy's way:
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 2 oz. vanilla vodka (Stoli Vanil, or Pinnacle Whipped, or if in the islands OceanVodka)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. coconut cream
  • 2 oz. frozen strawberries
Follow the same instructions substituting the vodka for rum.

I can hear the ocean now...
